On Friday, August 30, 2024, Florida's State Road A1A, which runs from Key West to the State's border with Georgia, signs went up ofically designating the route by its new name "The Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway".  Governor Desantis signed a bill earlier this year, which was passed unanimously by the Florida State legislature, renaming the roadway in honor of the legendary singer/songwriter/ entrepenuer/envirinmentalist who passed away September 1, 2023.

Arguably Florida's favorite "adopted son", Buffett created his own musical niche in the "Gulf and Western" sound he perfected over the course of his 5 decade long music career.  It was steeped in the time and culture of the Florida Keys it was born in during the 70's and his sound and the State of Florida have been inexorably intertwined ever since.  Jimmy's brand has grown from its musical roots to encompass various Florida business ventures including everything from bars and restaraunts, hotels and resorts, retirement communities and even a cruise line.  His love for the state was evident in the many environmental causes he championed through the years, including protecting the State's official marine mammal, the manatee, preserving the state's coral reefs and its pristine water sources, and lobbying for reauthorization of the Endangered Species Act. So when it came time to pick how to demonstrate the State's gratitude for all Buffett has contributed to Florida in so many ways, they took a cue from Jimmy himself.  His 5th album was titled "A1A", so choosing to rename that roadway in his honor was something of a no-brainer.
